THE NEED FOR THE PROJECT

The Victorian Desalination Project  will assist in the effort to provide a resilient and adaptive waer supply system for Victoria.

Fluctuating water storage levels and continued population growth are placing increasing pressure on our water supply system.

The Victorian Desalination Project will be capable of supplying up to 150 billion litres of water a year — about a third of Melbourne's annual water needs — with capability to expand to 200 billion litres a year in the future.

Introducing water supply from new rainfall independent sources, such as desalination, will help secure Victoria’s water supply in the long term.
