TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

Traffic management is an important issue for the project, and requires careful planning to minimise the impact of increased construction traffic on local roads and communities.

A Traffic Management Strategy has been developed. This strategy has been reviewed by relevant councils and VicRoads and modified to suit authority requirements.

A Traffic Management Liaison Group has been established to look at ways of minimising traffic impacts on local areas during construction of the desalination plant and the water transfer pipeline.

One of the group’s key roles is to exchange information about any upcoming construction works and to plan and implement mitigation strategies to ensure that any community impact is minimised.

The group meets regularly and comprises representatives from Bass Coast, Cardinia and Casey Councils, VicRoads, Victoria Police, DSE, AquaSure and the construction contractors.

The strategy also forms the basis of local area Traffic Management Plans (TMPs). The TMPs are created for each area where there is a direct interface between construction traffic and public roads. The TMPs cover road closures and detours as well as access ways from the pipeline easement to local roads. Local communities are informed of road works or road closures that may directly or indirectly impact them as soon as practicable after formal approvals have been obtained from the relevant authorities.
